Prostate MRI Scan
A prostate MRI scan can help assess the health of your prostate gland, while being a valuable diagnostic tool that allows your physician to help plan an effective treatment for a prostate disorder. MRI technology, also known as magnetic resonance imaging technology, uses a magnetic field to create comprehensive images of your body. These detailed images allow our radiologists at Park Avenue Radiologists to accurately identify and diagnose various disorders, illnesses, and diseases.
What is a prostate MRI scan?
A prostate MRI scan uses magnetic imaging to provide a detailed analysis on the health of your prostate gland. Your prostate gland, an anatomical structure located between your penis and bladder and in front of your rectum, is a gland that is designed to liquefy semen and to aid the process of fertilization. A prostate MRI scan evaluates the functionality and health of your prostate gland. An MRI scan can also be the first tool in detecting the earliest stages of a prostate disorder or disease. With a prostate MRI scan, our radiologists can help your doctor conclude if you have high or rising prostate-specific antigen levels, a substance that is created by your prostate gland. High or rising levels of prostate-specific antigen may be a sign of prostate cancer or prostate infection.
What can a prostate MRI test help diagnose?
Magnetic resonance imaging of the prostate gland is often used to diagnose prostate cancer. While an MRI scan of the prostate gland can help our radiologists diagnose the earliest stages of prostate cancer, it can also be a valuable tool for gauging the severity of a cancerous growth. If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, an MRI of the prostate can help your doctor better understand your specific case of prostate cancer. A prostate MRI scan can help when planning a proactive prostate cancer treatment. A prostate MRI scan may also be recommended for men who have a family history of prostate cancer or who are at an increased risk for prostate cancer.
What can I expect from a prostate MRI scan?
In some prostate MRI scans, a contrast fluid may be administered to help our radiologists better interpret your prostate MRI results. You will be placed inside of our MRI machine, which has ample headroom and space to help avoid any anxiety or feelings of claustrophobia. You will be able to talk to our radiologists through a speaker within the MRI scanner if you have any questions or concerns. At the end of your prostate MRI scan, you will be able to return to your normal activities.
How long does a prostate MRI scan take, & when will I get my results?
Most prostate MRI scans can be completed in thirty to forty-five minutes, but the length of your prostate MRI test may vary depending on if you receive contrast fluid and other particular details of your scan. The use of contrast fluid may add fifteen minutes to the total length of your prostate MRI scan. Our radiologists work as quickly as possible to provide the most prompt, accurate prostate MRI results. For some patients, prostate MRI exam results may be available just one day after your prostate exam. When your results are available, your physician will contact you to discuss them.
