Pelvic MRI Scan
A pelvic scan is a noninvasive medical imaging tool that can be used to evaluate the health of your pelvis. As MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) technology uses powerful magnets and radio waves instead of radiation to produce images, a pelvic MRI scan is a consistently safe diagnostic tool for women of reproductive age. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we are dedicated to providing safe, effective medical imaging to detect any abnormalities.
What is a pelvic MRI scan?
Magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis provides detailed images of the pelvis and internal structures. During a pelvic MRI scan, images are taken of the pelvis and later combined to create a three-dimensional diagram of your pelvic region. The combination of multiple images of your pelvis allows our radiologists to detect any irregularities or growths. Pelvic MRI scans are often performed after an abnormal finding from a pelvic ultrasound. A pelvic MRI is more detailed and can allow for a more precise, accurate diagnosis.
What can a pelvic MRI scan help diagnose?
An MRI of the female pelvis aids in the diagnosis of conditions affecting the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Often ordered after pelvic ultrasound results prove abnormal, an MRI of the female pelvis will aid your physician in developing the most effective course of treatment. A pelvic MRI scan can help identify and diagnose ovarian cysts and masses, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, unexplained pelvic pain, infertility, abnormal bleeding and uterine, ovarian, and cervical cancer.
What can I expect from a pelvic MRI scan?
At the start of your pelvic MRI scan, you will change into a gown and lie down on the procedure table. You will enter the MRI machine, which has a spacious design to increase patient comfort and reduce any anxiety. While some patients are uncomfortable or become anxious about being in an enclosed space, the majority of our patients are comfortable during their pelvic MRI scan because of the spacious design of the MRI machine. You will be able to speak to one of our radiologists through a built-in speaker. Additionally, you also have the option to bring your own music to listen to during your pelvic MRI scan. If you feel anxious or like you need to exit the machine, you may request to briefly exit the machine. We value your safety and wellbeing above all else and will work with you to make your pelvic MRI scan the most comfortable procedure possible.
How long does a pelvic MRI scan take, and when will I get results?
A pelvic MRI scan takes approximately thirty minutes and is a noninvasive women’s imaging tool. In some cases, an intravenous injection to administer contrast dye may be needed for our radiologists to more easily differentiate healthy tissue from any unhealthy tissue. The use of a contrast dye may add up to fifteen minutes onto the length of your pelvic MRI scan. Additionally, if you need to pause the scan or if you are unable to lie still, our radiologists may have to retake certain images. Our highly respected women’s radiologists will begin to view your pelvic MRI scan results and will notify your physician when your pelvic MRI results are available. Your physician will then contact you to discuss your pelvic MRI results.
