Hand MRI Scan
A hand MRI scan depicts the bones, ligaments, and muscles of your hand and can help evaluate joint space, bone spurs, and fractures. Hand medical resonance imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field in order to create photos of the bones of your hand and surrounding tissue. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we combine the most innovative MRI technology and unparalleled patient care in order to provide accurate results and the most comfortable examination.
What is a hand MRI scan?
A hand MRI scan provides a black and white visualization of your hand, including bones, cartilage, muscle, tendons, and more. Our radiologists work quickly to accurately and promptly deliver your hand MRI test results. An MRI of the hand provides our radiologists with a more comprehensive understanding of the health of your hand when compared to traditional medical imaging tests like CT scans or X-rays.
What can a hand MRI scan help diagnose?
Hand MRI scans are often useful in gauging and determining the extent of injury to your hands and fingers after a trauma or accident. Also, a hand MRI scan is capable of helping our radiologists determine the cause for severe hand pain or discomfort. Certain conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis can also be effectively assessed through a hand MRI scan.

What can I expect from a hand MRI scan?
To begin your hand MRI test, you will lie down and enter our MRI machine, which is spacious to maximize comfort. Some hand MRI exams can be performed with your head outside of the MRI machine to avoid any feelings of anxiety or claustrophobia. We attempt to make every MRI scan the most comfortable examination possible. You also may listen to your own music while you are having your hand MRI scan performed.
How long does a hand MRI scan take, & when will I get my results?
The length of your hand MRI scan may vary, but most hand scans are completed within thirty minutes. The use of contrast fluid may add fifteen minutes on to the total time of your hand MRI scan. After your hand MRI, our radiologists will begin to read and interpret your MRI results as quickly as possible, providing a prompt diagnosis or evaluation. We strive to provide accurate MRI test results in the shortest amount of time possible. When your hand MRI results are available, we will send them to your physician, who will contact you to discuss your results.
