Brain MRI Scan
A brain MRI scan can help diagnose various medical conditions, diseases, or malformations of the brain. Brain imaging can also aid in the diagnosis or staging of chronic disorders such as multiple sclerosis or epilepsy. While neurological imaging is a useful tool in diagnosing various illnesses, it can also be used to gauge the severity of an injury after an accident. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we combine the highest level of patient care with innovative technology to provide the highest in neurological imaging.
What is a brain MRI scan?
A brain MRI scan uses magnetic resonance imaging to create multiple cross-sectional images of the brain. These detailed images can then be combined to create a comprehensive, three-dimensional representation of your brain. Neurological imaging allows our radiologists to evaluate the health of your brain and diagnose various neurological conditions.
What can a brain MRI scan help diagnose?
Your doctor may refer you for an MRI of the brain to determine the cause of symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, seizures, changes in thinking or behavior, blurry vision, or chronic headaches. A brain MRI scan is a versatile neurological imaging tool that can help diagnose and stage multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, or brain cancer. In addition, brain MRI scans are sensitive enough to detect signs of a stroke, aneurysm, or disorders of the eye, pituitary gland, or inner ear. Developmental irregularities, hydrocephalus (water on the brain), or brain hemorrhaging can also be assessed through brain imaging. Brain MRI scans are a valuable diagnostic imaging tool because they can detect medical conditions that are asymptomatic, such as Chiari Malformation, which may cause paralysis if it is not treated. Our radiologists use neurological imaging to detect the presence of serious medical conditions for the earliest diagnosis, leaving more time to create a productive treatment regime.
What can I expect from a brain MRI scan?
To begin your brain MRI scan, you will lie down on the procedure table and slowly enter the MRI machine. While many people fear MRI scans because they feel confined or overwhelmed by claustrophobia, our open-bore MRI machines have a full foot of headroom and are more comfortable and spacious than traditional MRI machines. Once you have entered the MRI machine, you will be able to speak to a member of our staff through a built-in speaker within the MRI machine. Additionally, we encourage you to bring your own music that you would like to listen to during your brain MRI scan. If you begin to feel unwell or uncomfortable, you may request to pause the scan and leave the machine to regain composure. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we value your safety and wellbeing above all and work to make your brain MRI scan the most comfortable, quickest procedure possible.
How long does a brain MRI scan take, and when will I get my results?
The majority of brain MRI scans can be completed in thirty to sixty minutes, but the length of your brain MRI scan may vary depending on what you are having evaluated. Our radiologists will begin to analyze and interpret your brain MRI results shortly after your brain MRI scan. As soon as your brain MRI results are available, a member of our staff will send a copy of your results to your physician, who will then discuss your results with you.
