Recognize Crohn's Disease with MR Enterography NYC

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 2013 AT 4:51 PM

Park Avenue Radiologists is pleased to be one of the few centers in NYC to offer MR Enteography! Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, also known as MRI, the MR Enterography uses radio frequency pulses to produce detailed imaging of the organs, soft tissues, and bone. One of the most common reasons doctors prescribe an MR Enterography to patients is to help diagnose and treat Crohn’s Disease.

Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease and is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain. While the exact cause of this disease is unknown, it causes the body’s immune system to mistakenly attack and destroy healthy body tissue, causing increased inflation of the gastrointestinal tract. While the disease may occur at any age, it commonly develops in people between the ages of 15-35.

Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease include:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Persistent diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss

Using the minimally invasive MR Enterography, doctors are able to pinpoint areas of inflammation or any other abnormalities in the small bowel. MR Enterography is more reliable than the traditional X-ray and does not involve ionizing radiation. In the past, patients relied on video capsule endoscopy for real-time imaging. At Park Avenue Radiologists, our advanced medical imaging allows us to provide patients with the MR Enterography as an easier and more comfortable imaging option.

In addition to Crohn’s disease, MR Enterography may also be recommended to:

  • Find internal bleeding
  • Find areas of irritation and swelling
  • Determine abscesses or tears of the intestinal walls
  • Help track how certain treatments are working

Stop living with abdominal pain, and talk to your doctor today about the possibility of Crohn’s Disease. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we’ll be here for you should you require an MR Enterography, or for any of you other imaging needs. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at 212.888.1000, or you may request an appointment online.
