Men’s Health at Park Avenue Radiologists: Lung Screening, Heart Screening, Colon Cancer Screening, Prostate MRI, and the Assessment of Alzheimer’s Disease

June is Men’s Health Month and this week, June 9-15th, kicks off the 20th anniversary of Men’s Health Week. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we understand the importance of preventive screenings and early diagnosis in aiding in the overall health of an individual. According to the bill that established Men’s Health Month and was signed into effect in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, “men who are educated about the value that preventive health can play in prolonging their lifespan and their role as a productive family member will be more likely to participate in health screenings.” This month, we take a moment to shed light on what some might consider surprising statistics surrounding men’s health and educate on the benefits of early diagnosis:
Women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men. (CDC 2001
In 1920, women lived, on average, one year longer than men. Now, men, on average, die almost five years earlier than women. (CDC)
1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 5 African American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Stage at diagnosis is the best indicator of survival of prostate cancer. (menshealthnetwork.org/healthfacts)
115 males are conceived for every 100 females. By the age of 100, women out number men eight to one. (NYT Magazine 3-16-03)
Encourage the men in your life to take an active role in improving their health. Park Avenue Radiologists, P.C. offers patients an array of screening procedures to help diagnose serious conditions at an early stage. CT Lung Screenings, Virtual Colonoscopy, CT Calcium Score, Coronary CTA, MR Prostate, and Amyvid PET Scans are performed at our private radiology facility located on New York City’s Upper East Side. These important screening procedures are often quick and painless, yet can save lives and assist your physicians in medical planning for longevity.
CT Lung Screenings are utilized to diagnose lung cancer before symptoms are present. If you are a current or former smoker, in the age group from 55 to 74 years, and have a smoking history of at least 30 pack years (1 pack a day for 30 years, 2 packs a day for 15 years, etc.) speak to your doctor to determine if a CT Lung Screening using our state of the art, ACR accredited, low dose CT scanner is an appropriate examination for you.
Virtual Colonoscopy has an established role in screening for colon cancer, recommended for all patients over age 50. Patients no longer need to undergo the discomfort of a barium enema or undergo invasive procedures for mere screening. The examination is performed in less than 5 minutes without need for injection or other invasive procedure. Our scanner maximizes the sensitivity for small lesions due to its volumetric image acquisition with near isotropic imaging; due to the high number of detectors image resolution is nearly identical in all 3 dimensions. Studies are evaluated on a dedicated workstation with 3d ‘fly through’ imaging software, providing a virtual image of the colon similar to what gastroenterologists see at colonoscopy.
CT Calcium Scoring and Coronary CTA are screenings for heart disease, most commonly coronary artery disease (CAD), the number one cause of death in the United States for both men and women. At Park Avenue Radiologists, we offer CT Calcium Scoring to patients at a cost of $99. A positive calcium score may mean that CAD is present, even if you are not experiencing symptoms. As recently mentioned on Doctor Oz, many Americans that are taking statins may not need to be. A CT Calcium Score may help guide your doctor in determining if statin therapy is right for you by determining if there is plaque visualized on the arteries. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, those who are at moderate risk for heart attacks may be recommended to have a Coronary Calcium Scoring.
Coronary CTA is becoming part of standard screening evaluations in high risk patients. The examination is performed in less than 10 minutes and does not require sedation. After placing ECG leads on the chest an initial scan is performed to assess for calcification in the coronary arteries. Then a standard intravenous injection is performed. The scan itself requires approximately 10 seconds for image acquisition.
Prostate MRI is becoming increasingly important in the evaluation/staging of prostate cancer. Park Avenue Radiologists is at the forefront of noninvasive prostatic imaging. Detecting prostate cancer at an early stage could help save your life. Our experience is enhanced by the addition of dynamic contrast enhanced imaging utilizing computer aided diagnostic software for assessment of vascular lesions. MRI of the male pelvis takes approximately 30 minutes and can be performed on our state-of-the-art Open MRI. Imaging for Alzheimer’s Disease plaque (Amyvid PET Scan) is performed by scanning the brain using Positron Emission Tomography (PET) technology aided with Amyvid, a contrast agent that facilitates determining if beta-amyloid plaque is present on the brain. This examination is for individuals being assessed for Alzheimer’s Disease or other causes of cognitive decline, thinking, or memory problems. A negative scan reduces the likelihood that Alzheimer’s Disease is present at the time of the scan and a positive scan increases the likelihood that Alzheimer’s Disease may be causing some of the patient’s impairment, though results cannot solely be used to diagnose the disease. The scan itself is completed in just ten minutes, while the injection of the contrast agent requires a 30 to 50 minute wait prior to beginning the scan. Following the examination, your doctor will discuss the results of the examination with you and determine the appropriate plan of care based on your test results in conjunction with the results of other tests you may have undergone.
