Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month: The Importance of Early Detection and Treatment

POSTED ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2014 AT 11:54 AM  by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

As back to school and fall weather commence, so does Women’s’ Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month. Gynecologic cancers are the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells originating in the female reproductive organs, including the cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva. While such cancers may be caused by a variety of factors such as genetic predisposition, environmental influences and suppressed immune systems, patients fighting all types of gynecologic cancer stand the best chance of recovery if they are diagnosed and treated early.

Here at Park Avenue Radiologists, we acknowledge the importance of early detection and intervention in promoting the reproductive health of our female patients.  As a result, we offer a wide array of radiologic services that aid in the early detection and treatment of potential gynecologic cancers such as Pelvic MRI, Pelvic Ultrasound and PET/CT . These diagnostic tools allow for timely and effective diagnosis, which in turn, offers our patients more effective treatment options.

Raising awareness of the importance of annual women’s wellness visits and available screening options (should they be recommended by your physician) is integral to preventing and effectively treating gynecologic cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that of the approximately 83,000 women that are diagnosed with gynecologic cancers in the United States each year, About 30,000 women will die. Many of these deaths are caused by the late diagnosis and treatment of previously curable cancers[1].

As testing for most gynecologic cancers first requires patients to acknowledge that they are having abnormal symptoms, it is extremely important for all women to take a proactive approach to their gynecologic health. Annual visits to the gynecologist, pap smears and follow up screening all play an important role in maintaining health and addressing potential cancers as early as possible.  Additionally, it is important to watch out for abnormal signs or symptoms of gynecologic cancers, so that you may visit your doctor as soon as possible.  While each form of gynecologic cancer has specific symptoms, a broad spectrum of symptoms may apply. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, consult with your physician.
