When the Common Cold is more than You Think

POSTED ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2012 AT 5:43 PM by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

As thermometers read lower numbers, chillier days and nights creep in, but along with the dip in temperatures comes the arrival of cold & flu season. However, cold like symptoms that do not go away may actually be more serious than you think. Lymphomas, malignant or cancerous white blood cells originating from the immune system, cause fever, chills, sweating, lack of energy, and swelling of the lymph nodes. Often misleading people into thinking they have the common cold, lymphomas represent the different cancers of the lymphocytes. In addition, our lymphocytes are responsible for recognizing infections and abnormal cells within the immune system and destroying them. When these cells become cancerous, they grow and multiply uncontrollably, often times collecting in tissues, and sometimes, resulting in tumors.

When it comes to lymphoma, there are two types; Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin. Both of these conditions cause similar symptoms but have different types of cells when examined under a microscope. Depending on what your cells read, will determine the type of treatments you will need to undergo.

At Park Avenue Radiology, we offer the PET/CT scan in Manhattan, to help your doctor diagnose and treat your lymphoma. Our medical imaging can show any abnormal enlargements in your lymph nodes and if the nodule contains a lymphoma or is benign. The PET/CT Scan in Manhattan can help your physician to pinpoint the exact location of cancer within the body, including lymphoma. Working together, the PET scan detects metabolic signals of actively growing cancer cells. Additionally, the CT scan provides a detailed image of the size and shape of the growth.  By combining the PET scan & CT scan, we can accurately locate small lesions or tumors more effectively than either imaging could do alone.

The PET/CT Scan in Manhattan provides a full-body scan that usually takes about 30 minutes. At Park Avenue Radiologists, our technicians will provide you with a comfortable scan along with optimal results, so you can be sure your condition is accurately diagnosed.

Don’t misjudge your symptoms when it comes to your health. If you have experience cold or flu like symptoms lasting more than two weeks and are concerned you may have lymphoma, contact your doctor to see if a PET/CT scan is appropriate for you. Our technicians and staff at Park Avenue Radiologists welcome any questions or concerns you may have regarding the PET/CT scan in Manhattan. You may contact us at, 212.888.1000 or request an appointment online.

Saving Lives, One Image at a Time

POSTED ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 08, 2012 AT 3:38 PM by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at Park Avenue Radiologists, we’re supporting the strong men & women battling breast cancer and reminding patients to come in for their annual mammograms and breast MRI in NYC.

Hoping to spread awareness past the month of October, our technicians are here year round to assist your imaging needs for a battle that affects so many men and women each year. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime, many of whom do not understand how crucial detecting breast cancer early is. With advances in medical imaging, we now have technology that is better than ever to sense cancer in the earliest stages, ultimately saving lives.

According to the American Cancer Society, yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. For women in their 20s and 30s, a clinical breast exam should be conducted every 3 years. Women who have a genetic family history of breast cancer however, should seek a breast MRI in addition to their mammograms. Early detection saves lives and our technicians are dedicated to providing you with your imaging needs for accurate diagnosis.

At Park Avenue Radiology, we offer both mammograms and breast MRI in NYC to meet your imaging needs. While mammograms detect many breast cancers, there is a risk that smaller, subtler signals may go unnoticed. A breast MRI however, is more sensitive when it comes to signaling subtle cancers that may otherwise go undetected by a mammogram.

Patients who have had breast implants may also find the breast MRI better suits their needs as it can provide an effective image of dense breast tissue. In addition, breast MRI detects lesions that mammograms may miss and is reliable for patients already diagnosed with breast cancer, desiring breast conversion therapy, or for those concerned of tumor reoccurrence.

Clear Imaging for the Not so Clear

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2012 AT 1:43 PM by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

One of the most common urinary problems seen by doctors today is hematuria. This condition involves unusual blood in the urine and can lead to feelings of fear and uncertainty, but thanks to the technicians at Park Avenue Radiologists, determining the cause of your hematuria is quicker, clearer, and more comfortable than ever.

Hematuria affects both males and females. Women, however, are more prone to develop this condition due to increased urinary tract infections. Older men are not in the clear either, as certain medications that irritate the urinary tract can lead to enlarged prostate, also increasing the risk for hematuria.

Hematuria can originate from kidney stones, blood clots, infection and cancer and appears as one of two types: gross or microscopic. Patients can easily see blood in their urine when experiencing gross hematuria. Those who experience microscopic hematuria, however, will not see a change of color in their urine, as it can only be seen under a microscope.

When you experience blood in your urine, your doctor may recommend CT Scans in New York. At Park Avenue Radiologists, our advanced imaging will detect any problems within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, ensuring you receive the right diagnosis for the cause of your specific case of hematuria.

CT Scans can diagnose what x-rays cannot. When scanning for hematuria, our technicians will perform a CT scan of the pelvic & abdomen which can detect infections, inflammation, cancers, kidney or bladder stones, blood clots, or any other abnormalities. For concerned patients, our facility offers low dose CT Scans, emitting the lowest dose of radiation possible while still producing clear images.

Our technicians at Park Avenue Radiologists know that finding any abnormalities within the urinary tract requires advanced imaging  along with comfort and security for patients.  Don’t skip out on your imaging needs during times of worry. Alleviate your concerns with CT Scans in New York to help you and your doctor diagnosis and treat the cause of your hematuria. Our staff and technicians are happy to answer questions you may have regarding your imaging needs. Contact our office at, 212.888.1000 or request an appointment online.
