Early Detection for Your Protection: Diagnosing Lung Cancer with CT Scans NYC

POSTED ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2011 AT 6:49 PM by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

During a typical day, people inhale approximately 17,280 to 28,800 breaths daily without even conscious thought. Having a Computed Tomography scan, or CT scan in New York City, may not at first seem like a pressing priority in your list of daily activities, but all your pressing daily activities require a fundamental component in order to allow your participation: air.

Healthy lungs are an integral part of living a healthy life, and a detriment to healthy lungs is lung cancer. Although there are those who run a higher risk of developing lung cancer, such as patients who smoke cigarettes, everyone has the potential to develop lung cancer. Fortunately, you can choose to monitor your lung health for signs of lung cancer with a visit to Dr. Liebeskind, M.D.J.D. at Park Avenue Radiologist. CT scans have shown a significant reduction in deaths from lung cancer due to early detection compared to other forms of detection, such as chest x-rays. Make a CT scan in New York for early lung cancer detection a priority, so you can enjoy all your other pressing daily activities and every breath in between.

Park Avenue Radiologists offers CT scans in New York City as a method of early detection for lung cancer. During your CT scan in NYC, patients will be required to lie still on an examination table while an x-ray tube rotates around your body, taking computer images of your lungs. Should your CT scan reveal a lung nodule, further follow up visits and scans may be required to monitor the nodule.

The size and appearance of the nodule dictates how often scans should be administered. Larger nodules may require monthly scans while solid or partly solid small nodules only require annual screenings. Nodules with a ground-glass appearance could require scans that range anywhere from three to twelve months depending on its size. Park Avenue Radiologists provide the latest technology in radiology equipment, so patients can rest assured that their scan will be of the highest quality. The medical staff at Park Avenue Radiologists encourage you to voice any questions or concerns you may have about CT scans for early lung cancer detection in our Radiology Center in New York office. You can contact us at Park Avenue Radiologists at 212.888.1000, or you may make an appointment online for a personal consultation with Dr. Liebeskind. This November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month at Park Avenue Radiologists

POSTED ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2011 AT 4:08 PM by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a national campaign dedicated to increasing support and attention to lung cancer. All across America, Lung Cancer Awareness Month promotes rallies, fund-raising events, and media coverage designed to raise money for lung cancer research and increase awareness about lung cancer prevention and early detection. Park Avenue Radiologists is committed to joining in the fight against lung cancer by offering computed tomography (CT scans) and standard chest x-rays, which can be used to detect lung cancer.

Lung cancer is generally divided into two different categories: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer, which grows and spreads slowly, is the most common type of the disease and accounts for nearly 85% of all lung cancer cases.  Small cell lung cancer accounts for approximately 20% of all lung cancer cases. With this type of lung cancer, the cancer cells are small in size but reproduce very rapidly, forming large tumors. Because small cell lung cancer grows so quickly, it often spreads to other parts of the body, frequently the lymph nodes.

Symptoms of lung cancer can vary by type, location, and size of the tumor. It is not uncommon for a person to exhibit no symptoms until the disease has reached advanced stages. When lung cancer is accompanied by symptoms, they can include coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest, shoulder, back or upper arm pain, coughing up blood, frequent pneumonia and/or bronchitis, decreased appetite, weight loss, hoarseness, facial swelling, and pleural effusion. Sometimes, symptoms occur when the cancer metastasizes to other parts of the body. These symptoms vary depending on where in the body the cancer has spread.

As with any cancer, the best prognosis for lung cancer depends on early detection and diagnosis. Even when no symptoms are present, lung cancer screenings can help your doctors detect lung cancer. When lung cancer is detected in its early stages, patients have more treatment options that include less invasive surgeries and a higher success rate.

This November, talk to your referring physician about the risk factors for lung cancer, then schedule your lung cancer screening at Park Avenue Radiologists.

Park Avenue Radiologists Celebrates National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

POSTED ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 03, 2011 AT 5:16 PM by Dr. Marc Liebeskind

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to promoting breast cancer awareness, spreading knowledge about the disease, and providing greater access to screening and early detection services.

At Park Avenue Radiologists, we are committed to joining in the fight against breast cancer by providing women with the most up-to-date screening options available. We offer mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, breast MRI, and breast MRI biopsy in our state-of-the-art Manhattan radiology practice.

Regular breast screenings are an important part of the early detection of breast cancer. Health professionals agree that all women should perform self breast examinations every month and have a breast exam performed by their gynecologist or primary care physician at least once a year. Both the American Medical Association and the American College of Radiology also suggest yearly mammograms for women over the age of 40. While mammography is not a perfect study, it can help detect abnormalities in breast tissue that may indicate disease while it’s still in its early stages. Positive mammography results can be confirmed with additional testing.

This October, celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by taking control of your breast health. The best way to fight breast cancer is to detect it in its early stages. Contact your referring physician and request your screening at Park Avenue Radiologists today!
