What is an ear MRI scan?

An ear MRI scan, also known as an internal auditory canal MRI scan, allows our radiologists to precisely evaluate the health of your ear, specifically your internal auditory canal. Your internal auditory canal holds a cranial nerve that helps you hear and balance. If this nerve becomes damaged or injured, you may experience difficulty hearing or balancing. An ear MRI may be suggested for a patient who experiences tinnitus (ear ringing), dizziness, or loss of hearing.

What can an ear MRI scan help diagnose?

An ear MRI is designed to detect any abnormalities in your internal auditory canal or any signs of a serious disease. Our radiologists also look for tumors in your auditory canal, which are often referred to as acoustic neuroma or vestibular schwannoma. An ear MRI scan is designed to help patients who may experience hearing loss due to a disorder of their internal auditory canal.

What can I expect from an ear MRI scan?

To begin an ear MRI, you must remove all personal effects, jewelry, or items containing any wire or metal. You will lie down on the MRI table and enter the MRI Machine. Our MRI machines at Park Avenue Radiologists are spacious and designed to comfortably fit all patients. If you are anxious or uncomfortable during your ear MRI test, it is important to know that if you wish to exit during your ear MRI to gain composure, we can promptly pause your scan. Inside the MRI machine, you will be able to talk to our radiologists through a speaker if you have any questions or concerns. You also will be able to listen to your own music during your ear MRI. Our MRI machines have a full foot of headroom, providing you ample space to feel less enclosed.

How long does an ear MRI take, and when will I get my scan results?

All MRI scans vary in length depending on your individual symptoms and what you are having evaluated. However, the majority of ear MRI scans of the internal auditory canal can be completed in thirty to sixty minutes. If any contrast is used during your MRI test, your MRI scan may last fifteen minutes longer. Our team of radiologists will quickly work on evaluating your ear MRI results and send your doctor a report of our findings. Your physician will then contact you to discuss your ear MRI results.
