Ankle MRI Scan
An ankle MRI, also known as magnetic resonance imaging, is a strong medical imaging device that uses a magnetic field to create a comprehensive, accurate visualization of your ankle. Our radiologists at Park Avenue Radiologists are able to see a detailed image of your ankle, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bone during an ankle MRI scan to help diagnose any pain, restriction of mobility, or other recurring symptoms.
What is an ankle MRI scan?
An ankle MRI scan uses cross-sectional images of your ankle to create a highly detailed visualization of your ankle and its bones, tendons, muscles, and tissues. Our radiologists can then use this comprehensive visualization to assess the health of your ankle and diagnose any conditions, trauma, or injuries.
What can an ankle MRI scan help diagnose?
Ankle pain and injury are both extremely common due to wear and tear or accidental injury. An ankle MRI scan may help to determine the cause of pain or instability. Additionally, our radiologists are able to rule out a bone fracture or tear of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, or cartilage with an ankle MRI scan. Arthritis can also be detected with an ankle MRI scan. Finally, our radiologists may also look for tumors of the bone or soft tissue during an ankle MRI scan.
What can I expect from an ankle MRI scan?
Our innovative MRI machines have ample space for comfortable MRI testing. Prior to the start of your ankle MRI scan, you may be given a contrast fluid or dye, which will help our radiologists better visualize the individual facets of your ankle. Once you have entered the MRI machine, you will be able to speak to our radiologists directly through a speaker within the machine. While our MRI machines are specifically designed to maximize patient comfort, some patients still feel claustrophobic or uncomfortable. If you feel unwell, you may request to exit the MRI machine for a few minutes to regain your composure. For your entertainment and comfort, we also encourage you to bring your own music that you will be able to listen to during your ankle MRI scan.
How long does an ankle MRI scan take, and when will I get my results?
The length of your ankle MRI scan may vary depending on the size of the scan zone or if you are having other parts of your leg scanned simultaneously, such as your feet. Most ankle MRI scans can be completed in just thirty to sixty minutes. Ankle MRI scans that use a contrast dye or contrast fluid may be up to fifteen minutes longer. Our radiologists will immediately being to analyze your ankle MRI results. As soon as your results are available, a member of our staff will contact your physician to discuss your results and how you can obtain a copy.
